what is self-harm?

self-harm is when someone purposely hurts themselves to cope with overwhelming feelings, stress, or emotional pain. it isn't always about wanting to die - for many people, it is a temporary way to feel control, release, or distraction.

self-harm can look different for everyone. it may involve physical injury, but it can also include hurting yourself in less obvious ways.

examples of self-harm can include:

  • cutting, scratching, or burning
  • hitting yourself or punching walls
  • pulling out hair
  • restricting food or deliberately bingeing
  • misusing substances
  • putting yourself in unsafe situations on purpose

none of these mean you're weak, dramatic, or "attention seeking." they mean you're dealing with something really hard and trying to survive the only way you currently know how.

why people self-harm

people self-harm for many reasons, including:

  • to release intense emotional pressure
  • to feel something during emotional numbness
  • to express pain they can't put into words
  • to regain a sense of control
  • as a response to trauma, bullying, or identity struggles

whatever the reason, your feelings are real. your pain matters. and you deserve help and support.
